Will KETO Put You In the Poorhouse?

Will KETO Put You In the Poorhouse?

Many physique-based athletes dread low-carb eating because they love the pumped-up feeling of carbs, they love the insulin spikes which normally make for energy rushes, but they hate the consequences. Drastic changes in insulin are used in certain situations to help transport nutrients into the bloodstream (e.g. creatine, arginine, EAA’s); however, they make for mood swings, may bring about adult onset diabetes, and oftentimes, when the spikes occur at night or immediately preceding a sedentary time, it results in weight gain. And not just any weight-gain, but an increase in fat. Insulin spikes may also contribute to havoc on the metabolism and contribute to GI distress, depending on the foods consumed.
The Keto Diet, otherwise known as Atkins or simply Low Carbing, is the most steady state diet of all. Those in ketosis have no insulin spikes, they don’t have mood swings, and they rarely, if ever, consume simple sugars. There’s no bread, candy bars, or other empty calories in their diet. They eat meat, eggs, butter and plenty of leafy, green vegetables. Those truly in ketosis, burn fat as fuel. They also take in large amounts of protein, which is extremely helpful in repairing muscle tissue after workouts. The problem though, is most bodybuilding gurus and researchers don’t believe muscle can be built without carbs – or – at the very least, without replenishing glycogen stores at least once per week.
The debate won’t be settled here, but we’ve seen a lot of indications that low carbers may in fact be able to build muscle. With regard to cost, eating on a low carb diet can be done on a budget, but where you shop is key.
Some of the best places to shop, are farmers markets. You normally deal with growers directly and depending on the day you go, even the time of day you go, can mean big savings. Buying wholesale and freezing what you won’t eat that given week, is key. Finally, looking for deals, even at mainstream markets, helps. You don’t have to buy cheap food, but you can find great food at great prices – just don’t be afraid to look! Don’t be afraid to cut and save coupons. Saving money can be hard work, especially at first, but just think about all the extra money you’ll have?
