Lack of Exercise
Lack of Exercise
By: Marylin Salgado
Nothing is more frustrating to me then hearing comments and announcement on the radio from Medical Providers and diet programs stating the following:
- Lose weight with this pill and you won’t have to exercise.
- No exercise, no diet, just pure weight loss.
- Shed excess pounds with this great diet program.
Ok, so no, no and no!! There is no magic pill. In an article released in May of 2017, the United States is the MOST OBESE nation in the WORLD. THE WORLD…. GET THAT!!!! Followed by Mexico and New Zealand. I know, I know… who can give up a good taco? On a more serious note, the United States has encouraged a culture of fast, easy and convenient. Pizza gets delivered, food gets handed through a drive thru window, because God forbid, we must walk into a restaurant; and even groceries are now delivered to your door. I mean, really?? I understand that elderly and handicap need this help, but those of us with all our fours, you really need all that hand to door service? Ah…. the answer is no. Get off your lazy butt and do it.
Doctors recommend 30 minutes of walking as exercise a day. 30 minutes out of 24 hours…. oh, the insanity!! How can we possibly move our overweight’s butt off the couch and leave the chips behind to walk for a whole 30 minutes? It is unheard of in the United States. But so is a stroke, heart attack, diabetes, right? Wrong!! Walking 30 minutes a day helps with maintaining weight, a healthy heart and lungs, because we must exercise the heart and lungs which are very important organs. Your heart pumps blood and in very few short, uncomplicated words, the heart sends the blood to your lungs to get oxygenated. This process happens with every heartbeat, which assists the oxygenated blood to flow through your body and all your major organs.
So, for medical providers to encourage such non-exercise behavior is disgusting. We have endured years upon years of evolution without all the fancy footwork scientists have done to literally make our lives “easy.” Our lives are easy, but they don’t have to be so easy that we are riding on flying chairs like in Wall-E. This animated movie made a big statement about laziness and obesity in the United States. And even though the movie centered around the romance between two very cute and interesting robots, to me the part that really stuck was how real that future might be for some of us.
Here are some issues you will have (not might have), but will have from lack of exercise:
- Weight gain, which can lead to obesity
- Problem with joints, to the point of joint replacement
- Muscle wasting
- High blood pressure
- Heart disease
- Insulin dependent Diabetes
- Depression
- Certain types of Cancer
- Death (yes people, death)
Not exercising is just as bad for your health as if you did smoke, even if you are not a smoker. I could literally type two to three pages worth of information and studies telling you why lack of exercise is bad for your body. And please, to those medical providers out there who are themselves overweight and tell your patients to lose weight, don’t be a hypocrite. First lose weight and then suggest it. Lead by example. And shame upon shame on the Centers for Disease Control for not acknowledging and slashing numbers on the amount of deaths caused by Obesity and those individuals dying of heart disease. What do you think caused the heart issue in the first place? But, hey, you ARE the professionals. Who am I to criticize your expertise? Anyway, that’s my two cents on that. As for the no exercise rule, I don’t know. You go ahead and do that. See if your heart will listen to you when it decides to stop beating.
